Māori Language Orthography Guidelines Review
Haemata supported Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori | Māori Language Commission to review and update the Māori Language Orthography Guidelines.

The Opportunity
Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori | Māori Language Commission sought to improve the Guidelines for Māori Language Orthography. Translators and interpreters rely on these guidelines to maintain the quality and consistency of te reo Māori in their work. The objectives of this project were to review the orthographic guidelines produced in 2012 and to provide a report outlining recommendations on how to improve and/or update them for relevance in 2025 and beyond.
Our Response
To address the challenge, Te Ohu Arotake was convened to provide expert advice on the relevance and quality of the current orthographic guidelines. A group of 5–6 Māori language specialists—including translators, editors, authors, broadcasters, teachers, and researchers—participated in a two-day hui. During this process, the group identified current best practice, critically reviewed the 2012 guidelines against those standards, and determined areas requiring amendment, clarification, or expansion. The hui also scoped and refined practical recommendations to inform improvements for the next iteration of the guidelines.
The Outcome
Haemata provided a review report which outlined recommendations for updating the guidelines. Key themes included simplifying rules, improving consistency, clarifying macron and word-division practices, updating guidance on proper names and capitalisation, and enhancing accessibility and digital usability.
The Conclusion
The review and update of the Māori Language Orthography Guidelines has ensured they remain relevant, clear, and practical for 2025 and beyond. By drawing on the expertise of Māori language specialists and aligning with best practice, the updated Guidelines strengthen consistency, accuracy, and accessibility of te reo Māori. These improvements provide practical support for translators, educators, and wider professional use, reinforcing the integrity and usability of te reo Māori across Aotearoa.
