He Pikinga
Haemata developed online learning modules as part of He Pikinga: Te Ao Māori, strengthening understanding of tikanga, kawa, waterways, and whenua-based connection.
The Opportunity
Toitū te Whenua | Land Information New Zealand required online learning modules to support the wider programme He Pikinga: Te Ao Māori, focused on the practices and protocols of kawa and tikanga.
The initiative needed to be accessible, engaging, and fit-for-purpose for learners at a capable level, with existing experience engaging with Māori and iwi, while supporting practical application in the workplace.
Our Response
Haemata designed and developed three online modules in RISE 360, structured as three 15–20 minute modules. Each module included two to three short lessons to support steady learning and easy completion.
Content was developed to align with the wider programme intent, enabling learners to deepen understanding of kawa and tikanga and how these practices can be integrated into everyday workplace environments.
The Outcome
The module supported learners to build understanding and confidence in:
- recognising the importance of relationships in te ao Māori
- appreciating Māori connection to the wai/waterways and whenua/land
- integrating kawa and tikanga in the workplace.
The Conclusion
He Pikinga responded to the need for a structured online learning module that strengthened understanding of kawa and tikanga within the Toitū te Whenua | Land Information New Zealand workplace context. Through a clear, modular design and kaupapa-aligned content, the module supported learners to connect relational practice, whenua-based understanding, and everyday application.
